Waitlist Strategies

Every year, college admissions season brings a mix of emotions for international students. HYPS Admissions understands that being deferred or waitlisted can be both disappointing and confusing. However, there are ways to improve your chances of getting off that list and into the school of your dreams.

Demonstrate Continued Interest in Your Top Schools

To out-compete other applicants on the waitlist, show HYPS Admissions that you are still committed to attending their school. Promise to enroll if accepted, or make it clear that their institution remains your top choice. Send emails or letters to your international admissions representative expressing your admiration for the school and how honored you would be to attend. If possible, revisit the campus and take an official tour.

Stay Active to Boost Your Chances

As you communicate with HYPS Admissions, highlight any new achievements or activities you've engaged in since submitting your application. Demonstrate that you are a leader in your community and have continued to succeed even without the admissions committee's attention. Additional letters of recommendation can also serve this purpose, but be mindful of each school's policies on recommendations. Going over the limit could be counterproductive.

Be Personable with Admissions Representatives

Standing out from other applicants requires more than just the content of your messages. Make an impression by injecting humor and personality into your emails and letters. Admissions representatives are unlikely to read an essay or remember a message that simply describes your actions. Show HYPS Admissions that you are a uniquely personable candidate who would be a valuable addition to their institution.
